Summary of PRS and Act 56

Act 56 of 2017 became effective July 1, 2018. This act was created for the purpose of Professional Regulation of Law Enforcement Officers by the VCJC.  Act 56 has changed the landscape of law enforcement accountability in Vermont.  For more information on statute 20 V.S.A. ยง 2401 click here

PRS Subcommittee Meetings

Act 56 of 2017 became effective July 1, 2018. It is an act relating to the Professional Regulation of Law Enforcement Officers by the VCJC. To help navigate this responsibility a VCJC sub-committee was created. This committee consists of no more than five VCJC members. Membership composition includes a person with lived experience, a law enforcement officer, an organization focused on victims, and a member of the NAACP. Members will assist the Executive Director with the guidance and investigation of professional regulation matters. This sub-committee reviews complaints, makes a determination based on their findings and provides a recommendation to the Council on whether a certification should have any sanction, stipulation, or should be set for hearing.
