The Physical Fitness Test consists of two (2) timed trials; a 1.5-mile run and a 500-meter row. The 1.5-mile run, and the 500-meter row are graded using a time standard and percentage comparison set by the Texas DPS Fitness Institute. Use the calculator listed here to see what the required time is for your age, weight, and gender. Currently, candidates must rank in the combined 40th percentile or better. The percentages of each of these evaluations will be averaged together for an overall score. All candidates taking this evaluation will do so in the presence of a certified AED/CPR tester.
The Run:
The 1.5-mile run is held outdoors regardless of the weather conditions. It consists of 3.5 laps around the academy crossing the finish line a total of 4 times. Each time you cross, your time will be called. If you are running with earbuds, you may only have one earbud in your ear while running.
The Row:
The 500-meter row is held indoors on a rowing machine. The damper setting is set to 5 for each of the evaluations. Once you start the row you must not stop until you have reached the 500-meter mark. If you stop, your test will be void. An instructor may tell you to stop if you appear to be unwell or unsafe.
Failure of the Physical Fitness Test disqualifies the candidate from entrance into the Academy. The physical training entrance test is designed in accordance with the standards set forth by the Fitness Wellness Unit within the Education, Training and Research division of the Texas Department of Public Safety. Please arrive in appropriate clothing, time will be given in-between tests to change for those continuing to the psychological testing.
Level III Orientation Physical Fitness Test
All potential recruits for the Level III Basic must attend and pass the PT test on one of the following dates regardless of having passed the PT test on a date not listed below. There are three (3) sessions available before the start of each class, only one must be attended and successfully completed.
